The Photo History Museum in FUJIFILM SQUARE is pleased to announce the photo exhibition "The Founders of Magnum Photos ― Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodgers and David Seymour" which runs from September 1 ? November 30, 2012.

Magnum Photos, the international photographic cooperative, was founded by four of the world's most prominent photographers, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David "Chim" Seymour, in 1947. The cooperative was set up with the aim of ensuring photographers' rights and the artistic freedom to capture subjects as they wished to portray them. At the time the cooperative was founded, it was common practice for publishers to disregard the wishes of photographers, crop photos as they saw fit, and insert inaccurate or inappropriate captions. Unhappy and growing increasingly frustrated at this practice, Capa suggested the establishment of a cooperative that would protect the rights and freedoms of photographers. Cartier-Bresson and the others quickly concurred, and Magnum Photos was born. Although the photographs taken by the members of Magnum Photos were featured mainly in popular magazines and other leading publications of the time, today their works are widely viewed as masterpieces of photographic art, and are displayed at museums and galleries around the world.

Today, Magnum Photos has over 50 members who are active not only the field of photojournalism but also in a diverse array of other photographic genres including commercial and fashion photography.

This photo exhibition looks back at around the time when Magnum Photos was founded 65 years ago through the prism of the photographic works of its founding members, their shared curiosity and respect for what was really going on in the world, and their desire to transcribe it visually
