FUJIFILM SQUARE is pleased to announce the Great Railway Photo Exhibition – a collection of photographs that communicate the attractions of traveling by the Shinkansen bullet train and other trains on Japan's extensive railway network. The exhibition runs from September 12 – October 1, 2014.

The high-speed Tokaido Shinkansen began operating on October 1, 1964, symbolizing Japan's period of high economic growth. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of Japan's first ever Shinkansen line, we are holding the Great Railway Photo Exhibition, which introduces visitors to the attractions of the extensive railway network that has served Japan for the past decades. The exhibition will display approx. 100 photographic works by seasoned and young railway photographers that strive to encapsulate the harmony of railways with the natural beauty of Japan's landscapes and the four seasons, and the pleasure derived from traveling by railway.

In the special display entitled “53 stations of the Tokaido Shinkansen line,” visitors can follow the route of the entire Tokaido Shinkansen line from Tokyo Station to the final station at Shin-Osaka in a series of photographs. The display consists of photographic works by young emerging railway photographers, who have captured images of the Shinkansen from novel, fresh photographic perspectives.

The exhibition also includes a photo corner that provides a variety of features to enable visitors to experience the joys of traveling by railway.

Added attractions are the photographic works on display by the producer of the exhibition, Seiya Nakai, and a photo collection of solitary railway journeys taken by young photographers. Visitors can also avail themselves of the opportunity to take a commemorative photo in front of a photo panel at the corner displaying a full-size photograph of the Shinkansen. The photo measures 3.5 meters in width and stands at a height of 4 meters, enabling visitors to get a commemorative photo that conveys the awesome power of the Shinkansen high-speed train.

In addition, visitors will be able to view a recreation of the Yurutestu Gamo line, a fictitious railway line that the producer, Seiya Nakai, has created in his photography studio, and take photos of nostalgic light railways running on a powerful G gauge line. Original railway lines and carriages have been produced specially for the exhibition, with a vast expanse of blue sky as a backdrop, to reproduce the image of a train coursing its way through Japan's natural landscapes. Natural foliage has been placed alongside the railway to further heighten the sense of reality and enhance the photo experience.

Visitors will be able to take photos in all areas inside the venue.

Profile

Seiya Nakai
Born in 1967, Nakai has gained fame as a railway photographer for encompassing all aspects of railways into his images in a departure from the works of previous railway photographers who tended to focus solely on trains. He has created a new railway photography genre with “A Railway a Day” and “Yuru Tetsu.” His photo collection “A Railway a Day,” which started up in the spring of 2004, encourages budding photographers to take a railway photo once every day, and the related blog is still going strong. In addition to advertising photography and magazine photo shoots, Nakai is engaged in a wide range of activities including lectures and television appearances. He is also the president of Photo Nakai. His photographic collections include "A Railway a Day," "Textbook of photos with a digital single-lens reflex camera," "DREAM TRAIN" (Impress Japan), "Yurutetsu" (Creo), and "Arakawa Line Streetcar Photo Walk" (Genkosha).
