George Nobechi
Born in Tokyo in 1980. Worked as an institutional equity trader in Finance until 2014 when he was inspired by a photography festival in New York and decides to pursue the life of a photographer as a career. Journeyed across the American Southwest for nearly three years while studying photography.
He is a two-time Top 50 winner of the noted photography competition Critical Mass (Series: “Here. Still.” and “The Japan I Hadn't Seen”), among numerous international awards. Solo exhibitions held in Italy, Germany, the United States, Argentina and Mexico. His 2022 solo exhibition: “Eastern Light, Western Wind” was held at the Frederick Harris Gallery at the Tokyo American Club.
His works have been published in media such as Newsweek Japan, HuffPost, Photo District News, Asahi Camera, and Tokyo Shimbun, and are in the collections at the University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography and the Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography. Represented by Patricia Conde Galeria (Mexico) and the Webster Collection (USA).
In 2021 he moved to Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, a base from where he produces photography-related events throughout Japan under the banner of Nobechi Creative (established in 2017). He is also the Creative Director for the inaugural Karuizawa Foto Fest to be held this year.
