Highlights

  • Photographer Naoki Ishikawa first set foot in Tibet at the age of 23, marking the beginning of an epic journey in the Himalayas. Starting with an Everest expedition in 2001, he continued to shoot with film cameras while scaling all fourteen of the world's peaks of 8,000 meters or more, ultimately completing the series with his ascent of Shishapangma in 2024.
  • This exhibition includes many works being shown for the first time, such as positive-film images from his first expedition. Approximately 70 large-format photographs trace Ishikawa's 23 years of climbing in the Himalayas.

Photographer's Message for the Photo Exhibition

I actually stood in these places, and saw the landscapes captured in these photographs with my own eyes. This is not about logic. These are not calculated artistic expressions, but undeniable records of what I experienced. Over the past 30 years, I have traveled to every region of the globe. Among all those travels, the times I spent in the Himalayas have seeped into the depths of my body as the most intense experiences. I can never forget them, and yet memory inevitably fades. No matter how precious, water carefully scooped up with both hands eventually slips through the fingers, leaving only lingering sensation in the end.
I don't want to forget any of it, the suffering or the joy. I don't want to forget the countless encounters and farewells. That's why I photographed everything in crisp detail. What you see here are a record of those days, like a light source that will continue to illuminate the darkness for the rest of my life.
