Herbie Yamaguchi
Herbie Yamaguchi was born in 1950 in Tokyo. He joined his school's photography club in his second year of junior high school. After graduating from university, he moved to London at the age of 23 and lived there for ten years, working as a theater actor while actively pursuing photography. His portraits of musicians were highly praised on the punk rock scene. Drawing on his experience of overcoming serious illness in childhood, he made “hopeful living” the theme of his photography and has continued to photograph people ever since. In addition to photography, he writes essays, is a radio personality, has written lyrics for guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei, and has appeared on the television program Tetsuko's Room, earning a broad following that spans generations. He received the Photographic Society of Japan Award, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. He has been a visiting professor at Osaka University of Arts and Kyushu Sangyo University, and currently serves as principal of NPI (Nippon Photography Institute). His professional name “Herbie” is derived from the jazz flutist Herbie Mann, whom he greatly admires.
