October 27 – November 9, 2023 (The exhibition closes at 16:00 on the final day)

  • Photographer Yulia Skogoreva explores the struggle and determination of Nana, a young female sumo wrestler who is fighting for recognition in a traditional sport.

About the exhibition

FUJIFILM Corporation presents “Salt and Tears”, an award-winning exhibition by photographer Yulia Skogoreva from Friday 27th October to Thursday 9th November 2023 in FUJIFILM SQUARE.

This photographic project has received the Fujifilm award at the KYOTOGRAPHIE International Portfolio Review 2023. The KYOTOGRAPHIE International Portfolio Review is an opportunity for emerging photographers to present their work at KYOTOGRAPHIE, and Fujifilm has given an AWARD to this year's outstanding entries.

In Tokyo, September 2019, the Female Sumo Federation organised the Wanpaku (youth tournament) Sumo for girls. For the first time in history, young female wrestlers gathered from all over the country to compete against each other. This is where Yulia Skogoreva encountered Nana, one of the most outstanding female wrestlers of her generation. Taken aback by her personality, devotion and talent, Yulia Skogoreva saw an opportunity to build a project centred around her.

This photographic exhibition, “Salt and Tears”, is to shed light on the issue of the surrounding female Sumo wrestlers in Japan through the story of Nana.
